Do an initial hardening of the operating system

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Never assume the directory structures exist in your system as written in the document.  Never blindly follow security instructions -- read, review, compare, apply as it fits your system.

Take the following steps to do an initial hardening of the Windows operating system:

  1. Log into the server as the administrator.

  2. Download the Microsoft Baseline Security Analizer (MBSA).

  3. Run the MBSA, and follow the instructions in terms of downloading and installing updates not applied, modifying "restrict anonymous," modifying parent paths, and other areas.

  4. Do a complete review of the top Windows vulnerabilities, and take action as appropriate for your system.

Note:  The IIS Lockdown Tool along with URLScan will cause problems on Parallels H-Sphere systems.
